The Nuclear Medicine Section also provides a full range
of therapeutic services using radionuclides. These
services include treatment of hyperthyroidism and
thyroid cancer using iodine-131, treatment of B-cell
lymphoma using yttrium-90 Zevalin and iodine-131
Bexxar, treatment of polycythemia vera using phosphorus-32,
and treatment of intractable bone pain from metastases
using either samarium-153 or strontium-89. Additional
therapeutic services include iodine-125 Iotrex
for malignant brain tumors, provided in collaboration
with the Radiation Oncology Department, and yttrium-90
TheraSpheres for hepatocellular carcinoma, provided
in collaboration with Interventional Radiology
and Radiation Oncology.
PET/CT
services are available off-site at Southwest
PET/CT Institute, an independent diagnostic
testing facility (not affiliated with UMC) that
is staffed by the Nuclear Medicine physicians.
Training
is provided to resident physicians in diagnostic
radiology, fellows in nuclear
oncology, and fellows in cardiology. UMC Nuclear
Medicine is an affiliate clinical site for the Nuclear
Medicine Technology program at GateWay Community
College, Phoenix.
The Nuclear
Medicine Section participates in clinical trials
of diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals.
Current clinical trials include treatment protocols
for B-cell lymphoma, in collaboration with the Arizona
Cancer Center.
