Department of Radiology Home

Our mission is to provide cutting-edge radiology services to the people of Arizona, serve as a destination site for medical imaging research, and educate the next generation of leaders in imaging science and its applications. We are a state-wide department providing clinical imaging in Tucson and Phoenix as well as a large number of rural sites ranging from Nogales to Yuma to Tuba City. In total the department performs over 500,000 studies per year.

The U of A radiology department has a long and illustrious research tradition. For example, in partnership with the Optical Sciences program, clinical digital radiography was first developed within the department.

We are proud of our current research program which includes the Center for Gamma Ray Imaging, three animal MRI research units, the Southwest Animal Imaging Resource, the Advanced Research Institute for Biomedical Imaging (ARIBI), and the Biomedical Imaging Laboratory. We are the national coordinating site for the Imaging Response Assessment Team program recently developed by the NIH.

We are equally proud of our outstanding educational programs. Graduates from our radiology residency program hold leadership positions in departments throughout the country. Every U of A resident has passed the oral boards completely and on the first try in the past 5 years.

Currently the department's four-year Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training Program is accredited for 28 residents, practicing at UMC, the Southern Arizona VA Health System, and the Tucson Breast Center. Affiliated centers include Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, Phoenix Children's Hospital and the new University Medical Imaging on North Campbell Avenue.

We have outstanding fellowships in body imaging, musculoskeletal, neuroradiology, and interventional radiology. We also offer a number of graduate and post doc opportunities in imaging research.

And, of course, we are located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona with clear sunny skies, warm winters, and endless recreational opportunities.
